New mothers learn quickly that giving birth means nothing will ever be the same. For many women, this includes their bodies.
Australian blogger Mel Watts has bared her feelings – and her body – on Instagram, with a series of honest posts about how she came to terms with her changed appearance after giving birth to four children.
Admitting she has thought about herself as “revolting, disgusting, unflattering, repulsive”, the popular “mummy blogger” then admits she realised how much her body had achieved.
“If this is what I have to remind me of the most precious gifts I was given then I’ll wear my battle wounds,” she told her 154,000 followers, saying her stretch marks and loose skin were worth it for the “precious gifts” of her children.
Acknowledging that many women may feel similarly negative, she urged other mothers to “be kind” to themselves. “I’d assume that there are a few other women out there who feel as though they worth is measured by something so similar.”
The post, which has received over 17,000 “likes” on Instagram, no doubt struck a chord with new mothers also struggling to come to terms with the changes in their bodies. Hundreds and hundreds of Mel’s followers commented beneath the post, praising her for being so open and honest about an issue that affects so many mothers.
“You are an amazing human being. Who cares what lies under your clothing. You have a big heart and in all honesty that is really all that matters,” said one. “Such a gift to create life and you are empowering other mums around the world to be proud and to recognise that!” said another.
