Social media delivers a sanitised picture of most things, not least pregnancy, childbirth, and new motherhood. A quick lick of mascara, a well-filtered photo, and the new mother can make it all look so simple and effortless.
Not so for model and social media star Chrissy Teigen. Having given birth to her second child with singer John Legend, she made sure to show her 18 million followers the reality of the aftermath of birth. She posted a photo of herself holding new baby Miles while wearing hospital-issue mesh high-waisted underpants – to the delight of the many thousands of mothers in her following.
Many expressed their delight at such an honest depiction of those tough few days at home after giving birth – where caring for your new baby is as tough as your body’s road to recovery.
“Keeping it real @chrissyteigen, I remember those hospital undergarments oh so well,” one person wrote.”
Another woman commented: “This is what women actually look like after having a baby,” with another remarking: “This is real motherhood right here!”
One follower commented: “As a mom to a 1.5 year old and four month old… I love you a million times more now than before. So real and so honest about this crazy thing called motherhood. So much goals!”
“I just wanted to say thank you for posting the real pictures of what postpartum looks like. As a new mother of an 8-week old, you have no idea how much it helps to see what reality looks like on other women and that it isn’t all glamour,” read another comment.
Chrissy has since posted honest photos of her newly-acquired stretch marks, as well as an hilarious shot of her heading out to dinner with husband, glammed up but with breast pump firmly attached. After her last pregnancy with daughter Luna, she spoke openly about suffering with postpartum depression.
