The first few weeks of any pregnancy are a trying time, and many women feel alone and confused as they struggle to come to terms with distressing and debilitating symptoms, in addition to the mental health implications of pregnancy.
Brittany Noonan is a popular blogger and “social media mum” with over 51,000 followers on Instagram. She recently blogged about the first trimester, saying expectant mothers should not feel they have to keep the news of their pregnancy private, as they go through often tough pregnancy symptoms.
“I think we need to start ditching the 12 week rule and opening up to more people close to us, other mums who can understand you, letting our village help us and seeking professional help if needed,” she wrote on Instagram.
She blogged honestly about her feelings during those early weeks; “the emotional roller coaster, the hormones, the exhaustion, the painful boobs, the cramping, the spotting, the insomnia, the anxiety and tightness in your chest”.
“During the first trimester we are full of hormones, exhausted, sick, confused and have a million questions yet we’ve made this rule we must face the first 12 weeks alone because we’re not in the ‘safe zone’. We isolate ourselves, pretend everything is ‘normal’ when really we are struggling just to make it to work in the morning or to daycare/school drop off.”
According to Brittany, she believes this is the period when pregnant women need the most support; “we need to feel like what we are feeling is normal”.
She urges women to be honest with those who can help them through this difficult time.
“In those first few months many women are sick and exhausted, they aren’t able to physically or mentally function at the same capacity as they normally would so telling your employer, your workmates, your fitness instructors/personal trainer and anyone else that can help to take some of the pressure off you and help you to manage your workload & safely cope through these first few months could only be a positive.”
