Motherhood – the toughest job you will ever do. There is one day of the year when being a mother is truly celebrated, and Mother’s Day on May 13 saw millions of people take to social media to praise their own mother or to share their own motherhood experience.
What was clear from these posts was that motherhood is not a smooth path – rather it is a rollercoaster of learning and understanding and growing as a person as you develop as a mother.
Amanda de Cadenet, best-selling author and television presenter, shared a brutally honest post about motherhood on Mother’s Day, accompanied by a beautiful shot of her the day before she gave birth to her twins. She has previously been extremely candid about the postnatal depression she suffered after the birth of Silvan and Ella in 2006.
“Oh motherhood! A beautiful mix of joys and hardships, moments of the most profound love I have ever known and also despair and soul crushing isolation… Motherhood has been my greatest teacher and motivator to heal.
Amanda is honest when she says “motherhood is messy”.
“I do it imperfectly, a day at a time, sometimes a moment at a time. I do it with honesty , commitment, and allowing myself to never buy into the completely dishonest narrative that motherhood is a breeze where there are no forgotten school lunches, month-old chipped nail polish, un-waxed legs, emails not returned for way too long and cancelled dinners because my bedtime is often at the same time as my kids.”
“Happy Mothers Day to all the moms, mom figures, people who are without a mom or are estranged from theirs. But an especially happy day to my tribe of Messy Moms.”
