Maternal Mental Health Matters Awareness Week saw the online community of mothers and supporters come together to inspire and encourage pregnant women and new mothers experiencing mental health struggles.
Just one of those inspiring posts was from popular UK author, actress, and blogger, Giovanna Fletcher. She posted this to almost a million followers on her Instagram:
“We are now at the end of Maternal Mental Health Matters Awareness Week. I’ve spent time thinking back to my early days of motherhood and wondering what could possibly have helped make it a tiny bit easier. It’s taken a lot of thought, but I’m going to go with SELF KINDNESS.”
Giovanna explains that mothers need to stop criticising themselves.
“Don’t compare yourself to others, because you’ll never truly know what another mum is experiencing, so don’t assume you’re the only one finding it tough. You won’t be.”
Her post continues in a humorous vein, highlighting all the little ups and downs that are part of life as a mother.
“So what if you left a whole bottle of expressed milk out on the side and now it’s off and unusable? At least you managed not to squirt your baby in the face today. What does it matter if your baby was the only one crying at today’s baby class and you couldn’t console them without a dummy? They’re called pacifiers for a reason.”
She encourages women to stop being so hard on themselves.
“My point is, you’re doing it. You’re getting through the day. No matter how messy, clumsy, clueless or frustrated you feel you were today, you did it. Stop being so hard on yourself, because you’re achieving far more than you think.”
